Here are the cold and flu remedies that actually work

Image
Cold weather doesn’t  literally make you sick , but the winter season does indeed make you more prone to catching a bad cold. Chilly conditions mean you spend more time indoors, where bacteria and viruses are more likely to linger in the air and on surfaces you touch, and the drop in temperature leaves your mucus membranes dry, irritated, and  more vulnerable to infection . The holiday season can be particularly rough on the ol’ immune system, what with all the traveling and hanging out with far-flung relatives and their exotic germs. And let’s be honest, you’re probably not taking the best care of yourself either—drinking, eating lots of unhealthy food, staying up late. So if you’re sliding into the holiday season with a nasty cold in tow, you can bet you’re not alone. Here are some evidence-based tips for nipping that virus in the bud before it interferes with your holiday fun (or with the mountain of work you’re supposed to finish before the party starts). What the Heck is Three-Phase Power (and how can you get some)?

Image
AIR COMPRESSOR MOTOR Vin Marshall I recently moved my shop, and in addition to the big issues, from forklift rental to sleep deprivation, we also had to deal with things like three-phase power, a variation of power delivery often used for big equipment. The old shop had it and the new shop doesn't. So what the heck is three-phase power and how can you convert machinery to go from the more common single-phase to three-phase and vice versa? Read on. For us, the impact was limited because only the air compressor had a three-phase motor. Some of the welding equipment had been running on three-phase, but can easily be re-configured to run on either three-phase or single-phase. But first, a short explanation of three-phase power. Alternating current does just as it's name implies and alternates cyclically, first flowing in one direction in a circuit and then reversing to flow in the other. As it does this, the magnitude of the voltage supplied varies continuously between...

Here’s what to expect when you try out the new Gmail

Image
NEW GMAIL Here's the window at which you'll stare for years to come. I spend a lot of time staring into the neatly-stacked, never-ending stream of emails that come through my Gmail account every day. There’s a good chance you do, too—the service has more than 1 billion active users. When a service that big gets a redesign, it’s a big deal. And today, Gmail got a new look and learned a few new tricks. Here’s a look at what you’ll get if you opt into the new layout or update the mobile app. How to get it This isn’t one of those situations where the new design will spring up on you without prompting—at least not yet. If you want to see Gmail’s new look, click on the little gear icon for your settings and click “Try the new Gmail.” If you have a Gmail account through your job or school, you'll have to wait until an admin allows your organization to update. On the browser If you switch over to the new design on your computer, you’ll immediately notice that things...

No, there has not been a successful human head transplant

Image
In a 2015 TEDx talk, Sergio Canavero made a bold and tantalizing claim: by 2017, he swore, he would conduct the first human head transplant. And if you’ve been paying attention to trending headlines today, you might think he’s followed through on that promise. He has not. Canavero has not completed a successful human head transplant, and it is very unlikely that he will ever do so. We repeat: No one has completed a successful human head transplant. Here’s what you need to know The claim Sergio Canavero has popped in and out of medical news for the past several years, but made headlines in 2015 when he found a willing subject for the surgery he hoped to perfect: the human head transplant. A human head transplant is exactly what it sounds like (except for the fact that we should really call it a body transplant, but whatever). The patient—likely someone with a degenerative muscle disease—would have their head removed and attached to a donated body. In theory, one could fix...
